Location: 1/4 mile Southwest of Garland Road & Buckner Boulevard in the 9300 block of Garland Road

Using collage as the compositional starting point, the installation is a reflection of the absent architecture of the former crowded site. This is a proposed pavilion and event stage for the Casa Linda neighborhood near White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX. The site is near the intersection of Highway 78-Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard. Three East Dallas landmarks are located within a 1/2 mile of the proposed site: The Dallas Arboretum, City Hospital at White Rock, and the historic Bath House Cultural Center.

The concept for the pavilion comes from a collage of the immediate context. Similar to an architectural palimpsest, in which the existing layers of objects or traces are covered or removed, the facades of two midcentury brick buildings—a two story medical office complex and a former church hall, both located immediately north of the proposed site and whose fronts face each other across a parking lot—were superimposed on top of each other. This resulting overlay of architectural elements was blended into a collage with the original dimensions of the superimposed facades informing both the scale of the new pavilion. This collage was translated into a free-standing structure with a sculpted concrete plinth and a welded steel structure composed of steel, cable railing, and laser cut porous metal panels that trace the existing architectural elements.

This fire station was designed as a case study for urban fire departments located in high-density areas. I designed and developed the overall program of the fire station, as well as produced design studies and 3D models, performed occupancy/code research, and ultimately produced marketing material including renderings and archival drawings as part of a research study into ‘Design Best Practices’ for urban fire stations while working at plus one design and construction. The fire station design was presented at the 2023 SWD Annual Conference held by the Southwestern Fire Chiefs Association in Baton Rouge from October 17-19, 2023.

4 Bay Fire Station – Using the concept of an ‘urban porch’, a large overhang creates a new identity within the community, creating opportunities for site engagement, protection from the weather, and ultimately functioning as a communal gathering space for the surrounding area. Inside, three main programmatic areas—Apparatus Bays, Living Quarters, and Business/Administration Offices—are organized based on functional, security, and administrative needs. A wide double stacked corridor on both levels is the main circulation strategy in the building and provides efficient response times to firefighters and first responders. The private quarters for the fire fighters are adjacent to the apparatus bays, and the dayroom allows visibility to the exterior with abundant space for different shifts to organize and unwind throughout their stay.

Similar in function to smaller fire stations, the more mundane and accessory elements of the program are evenly distributed, while the spaces most important to the firefighters are given priority and careful design consideration. This is intended to provide a sense of community and a ‘home away from home’ feeling for the career fire fighters living at the station. The wide exterior stair offers a public grand entry to the fire station while gesturing towards the ‘stacked’ nature of the interior. With large floor-to-floor heights creating a spacious interior, there are abundant design opportunities to celebrate the cultural and historical legacies of the fire station and its ties to the community.

2 Bay Fire Station - The fire station plays with volume and aperture by framing the exterior views at different floor levels, and by allowing natural light in with large openings and clerestory windows. The layout prioritizes the direct response for fire fighters regardless of their position in the building. The more mundane and accessory elements of the program do not take up valuable floor space, while the spaces most important to the firefighters are given priority and careful design consideration: Dayroom with abundant light, office space with carefully framed views, and private bedrooms. Also, the idea of treating the Fire Station Name as a graphic design element, combined with the application of modern materials on both the interior and exterior, create a unique design for an important public facility.

An art museum proposal in Silver Lake in Los Angeles. Inspired by handmade quilts from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, as well as street rods from the 1930s and 1940s, the building concept employed collage as both a material and formal technique for spatial planning. The collage became the footprint for an Outsider art museum, while also informing the material finishes.

Outsider Art is described as art that is created outside the boundaries of official culture, particularly art created by those on the outside of the established art scene. This includes art of the mentally ill, folk art, and other creative work by artists on the margins of the art world.

The literal translation of the collage into the building footprint creates a transparent wall between Sunset Blvd and the visitors inside the museum.  This separation is continued in the sculptural corten steel retaining walls that flow down the hill following the extents of the triangular-shaped site. Frosted channel glass is used along the side facing Sunset Blvd.  The effect of the glass, by distorting the view out to the street, creates a context for viewing the art.  The contrast of the curvy sculptural garden to the grid of the streets causes the triangular site to stand out.

An elevated take on a neighborhood pizzeria, this Dallas pizza and martini concept is a clash of genres, mixing relaxed sophistication and vibrant elegance. As a Project Designer on the Design Team, I was in charge of drawing production. I created the drawings, coordinated the design team, and worked with Harwood Design Factory (HDF) from July 2021 through December 2022, contributing to the success of this highly anticipated project in Uptown Dallas. A restaurant concept by Harwood Hospitality Group, a division of Harwood International, Poco Fiasco combines the playful aesthetic of an eclectic Brooklyn pizzeria with the comfort and tradition of a Pizzeria Italiana.

Plus One Design & Construction worked with Harwood International from May 2021 throughout all of 2022 to manage the design team, create, develop and finalize the architectural drawings, and guide the interior design and structural engineering consultants who enabled the realization of Poco Fiasco. The restaurant is the 10th concept realized by Harwood Hospitality, within as many city blocks, in Uptown Dallas.

‘Miles from the City’

I had a moving experience outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is a sculpture that began to take shape when I was standing on the side of the road in the middle of the desert. Miles from the city I was looking up at the night sky, and the Milky Way was clearly visible. Leaning against my truck, I turned my lights off but kept the radio on. Music was playing, the stars were very clear, and it felt like I was noticing the sky for the first time. The expansive nature of the universe was suddenly very real.

Design Intent:

A freestanding tapered concrete 'column' interrupted by angled corten steel panels: The steel panels inserted at the middle of the column break up the purity of the slender concrete extrusion. Laser cut holes in the corten panels are based abstractly off of the stars as they appeared in the night sky when I was standing on the side of the road in the Middle of Nowhere, New Mexico.

Plus One Design & Construction was selected by a Baton Rouge developer to create a concept for Take-Out Pizza restaurant concept for a lively square on North St in Downtown Baton Rouge.

I was responsible for the design of the interior renovation which consisted of initial design studies, selecting and coordinating material palette and graphic design opportunities, and ultimately producing the drawings used to receive the permit from the city. Major design elements that I contributed include the angled bar, ‘sawtooth graphic wall’, and Transition Portal from front of house to pizza ordering line.

Town Square Pizza was a design-build project completed by Plus One Design & Construction during summer 2023. The pizzeria takes over an existing restaurant space and injects new energy and modern design into the Town Square concept. The investors requested an efficient dining and take-out experience that required the designers to make use of the existing structure and provide creative solutions that fit with a small budget. Plus One created an angled pizza counter with diagonal wall projections that depict scenes of the downtown area. The angle of the counter opens towards the front where a bright red Transition ‘portal’ marks the check-out area. Both the subtle angles and minimalist interiors provide energy and excitement to a hungry lunchtime crow.

Denham Springs, Louisiana | 4,276 SF

The Labarre Residence, located in Denham Springs, Louisiana, was completed in the summer of 2022. A local architect and his wife commissioned Plus One Design & Construction to design a modern home for the aging couple who frequently hosted kids and grandchildren during the summer and winter months. Working closely with the design director at Plus One, we designed a home that was approved and lauded by the Greystone Country Club, where the home is located. As project lead I developed highly detailed BIM models, created and coordinated documents and drawing sets, prepared design presentations for the local architectural review board, and communicated with the client through regular correspondence and meeting minutes.

The North Interstate 820 Master Plan was commissioned by a North Texas developer who tasked Plus One Design & Construction to envision the potential for a commercial development in a rapidly growing suburb of Ft Worth. As project lead I worked with the HI-REIT development team to produce several design studies and plans that were used to attract investors and generate support among land owners in the area. The design director and cofounder of Plus One communicated to me a design vision that I turned into architectural drawings, schematic plans, and photo-realistic renderings for the client, which led to a meaningful and spirited conversation about the land’s potential.

A wall installation proposal for Indie Brewing Co. in Los Angeles, California. This installation is inspired by the beer tap handles used by the brewers to serve their beer and the overall shape of the Indie Brewing Company logo, a beer hop with the LA skyline profile at the top. Conceived as parts within a whole, the installation, which would be made of the 3D-printed IBC tap handles, takes the overall form of the Indie logo.

Located in an industrial warehouse on the LA river between DTLA and Boyle Heights, the brewery is a meeting place for the young and old, beer enthusiasts and casual drinkers. A map of the Boyle Heights neighborhood is visible within the installation, represented as a wide flat line that intersects the tap handles within the artwork. This installation celebrates the spirit of welcome and diversity that defines Indie Brewing Co.

This master bedroom remodel involved space planning and custom millwork design for a home outside of Dallas, Texas.

The design included a floor-to-ceiling furr-out and art nook that allows the family to display their private artwork, with built-in shelves and lighting control. Oak wood flooring, panel molding, and electrical routing were included in the addition and contributed to the transitional design aesthetic.

The design also included the selection of interior furnishings to compliment the family’s existing bed and armoire.

SCI-Arc Master’s Thesis:

My final thesis project is an architectural proposal to investigate both the key tectonic components and the accompanying geometries of Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA terminal as a generator for a new stair/circulation system. Ultimately, I produced a stair that exploited the tectonic strategies used in Saarinen’s TWA terminal into a new structural expression encapsulated in the merging of three tectonic systems: the monolithic, a light frame/welded steel tube construction, and a hybrid of the two.

I began by extracting some specific geometries that could be used as different building elements. These elements, all taken from moments surrounding Saarinen’s interior stair, were the result of taking slices out of the building.

These four primitives were then reconfigured in various sizes and scales from elements such as wall and roof to smaller elements such as stair handrails and treads.

These configurations had sectional qualities that were very different from the TWA terminal, yet still retained the formal qualities of the original. These elements essentially became a kind of hypothetical site for my later investigation. They became an interior condition in search of a circulation system.

This popular drive-thru coffee chain has many locations across North Texas. The brand is progressive and the architecture matches that energy while existing within the greater architectural environment of far North Dallas & Ft Worth. In 2022, Plus One Design & Construction was selected by the 7 Brew Company to guide seven different 7 Brew locations locations across the metroplex in as many months.

‘Fort Worth It’

This was part of a submission for an open call for artists to paint a large mural at Forth Worth’s Crockett Row Shopping Plaza located on West 7th Street near the famous Kimbell & Modern Art Museums.

The mural is a collage of the architectural and cultural elements within the city’s museum district including colorful silhouettes and figural abstractions of the downtown skyline and famous Fort Worth icons. The mural contributes to the hip arts and cultural scene known fondly to locals as “Funky Town”.

Camp Beauregard - National Guard Housing | Pineville, Louisiana

Plus One Design & Construction & CSRS (Baton Rouge) were selected to design new housing for National Guard service members and their families at the Louisiana National Guard’s Camp Beauregard Installation in Pineville, Louisiana. Working with the design director at Plus One, I contributed to the design and documentation of four primary housing schemes that were built following a Master Plan developed by Plus One & CSRS for Camp Beauregard. The individual homes were designed by Plus One with both Plus One & CSRS contributing to the design of the overall Master Plan, and CSRS also providing Civil Engineering services. Construction of the homes began in June 2022.

Design Narrative for the 3 & 4 bedroom schemes:

The three & four bedroom + two bath ranch schemes are able to rotate and fit on a rectangular or square site. The rectangular site uses considerably less land but has the carport facing the street resulting in less “curb appeal.” The plans shown utilize the setbacks suggested in the design guidelines - 30’ front and back yards and 10’ side yards. We suggested that the front yards could be reduced to 20’ resulting in less land per home and reducing the concrete drive ways by 10’. Multiplied by 40 homes changes like this could offer substantial cost savings. Features of these schemes include:

• Minimal SF devoted to hallways.

• Large open living spaces.

• Large kitchen

• Observe backyard from kitchen on square lot.

• Entry vestibule with closet.

• Porch continuation of living spaces.

• Carport reduces cost vs Garage

• “Ranch” construction less costly.
